Program Highlights

The Junior Associate at Geisinger has a unique opportunity to structure a year that is designed to benefit and meet the individual needs of the associate. Geisinger Medical Center is a tertiary care center with multiple surgical subspecialties and there are four additional community practice sites within the Geisinger Health System. Opportunities exist for the Junior Associate to participate in trauma and acute care surgery, colorectal surgery, surgical oncology, minimally invasive/bariatric surgery, and general surgery. Geisinger also has a surgical residency program. The Junior Associate will interact with surgical residents and may be involved with surgical education. The Junior Associate may be evaluated during each rotation for their operative skills and level of autonomy while developing an independent practice. The Junior Associate schedule will be designed to complement that of the residency program so that the residents can serve as first assists and learners to the Junior Associate. The Junior Associate will be responsible for his or her own clinics and have dedicated operative block time. The Junior Associate will also have an opportunity to learn and review concepts regarding practice management including RVU structure.

Program Description

The central location for both associates will be the Geisinger Bloomsburg campus; however, the academic year will be spent at several different Geisinger campuses. One associate will rotate to community practice sites in the Northeast and the other at Western community practice sites. Both Mastery in General Surgery Program Chief John Widger, MD, FACS, and Associate Director Mohsen Shabahang, MD, PhD, FACS, are responsible for the education activities of the Junior Associate. There will also be Senior Associates designated for each rotation to ensure oversight and guidance. The Junior Associate will also be included in the robust residency didactic program which includes clinical, didactic, simulation, and research teaching. The program also wants to provide enough flexibility so that the Junior Associate can tailor their schedule to fit their needs.
