Safely Minimizing Opioid Use After Abdominal Cancer Surgery: Advice and Guidelines for Practicing Surgeons

Speakers

Lesly Dossett, MD, MPH, FACS

Dr. Lesly Dossett is a surgical oncologist and division chief of surgical oncology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Dossett’s clinical focus is on breast cancer, melanoma, sarcoma, and complex gastrointestinal (GI) malignancies. She will be giving an overview of the opioid epidemic, the role surgeons have played, and evidence for overprescribing and persistent opioid use in early-stage cancer patients.

Naruhiko Ikoma, MD

Dr. Naruhiko Ikoma is a surgical oncologist at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Dr. Ikoma specializes in minimally invasive surgery, gastric, and pancreas surgery. He will be discussing strategies to safely minimize opioid usage after minimally invasive cancer surgery.

Cornelius A. Thiels, DO, MBA

Dr. Cornelius A. Thiels is currently a surgical oncology fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY, and is returning to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, to join the division of hepatobiliary and pancreas surgery this summer. Dr. Thiels serves on the ACS Patient Education Opioid Workgroup and will discuss Mayo Clinic’s experience in safely minimizing opioid prescribing after abdominal cancer surgery.
