Requirements for Associate Members

An Associate Member of the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators™ must be a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) who is a regionally or locally recognized surgeon educator, and who is committed to:

  • Participating in activities of the Academy
  • Excelling in surgical education and training
  • Pursuing scholarship to advance this field 

Selection Criteria—Regional or Local Recognition

The following criteria will be used to select candidates for Associate Membership in the Academy. The portfolio of educational achievements and contributions (via completion of an online application), curriculum vitae, biosketch, and personal statement from the candidate will be thoroughly reviewed along with supporting information, which includes letters of reference. Associate Members will be expected to have made significant contributions in some or all of the following areas.

Established Record

  • A locally or regionally recognized surgeon educator

Current Contributions

  • Provide a description of your current position and/or efforts as they relate to surgical education


  • Educational leadership within academic institutions or health systems


  • Contributions to scholarship in education based on the broad concept of scholarship (Boyer, Carnegie Foundation,1990)
  • Development of new educational models or curricula
  • Development or participation in faculty development programs


  • Service on local, regional, and/or national education committees

Personal Educational Development

  • Pursuit of advanced training in surgical education and training
