Mentoring Program

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) Women in Surgery Committee offers a year-long Mentorship Program for women surgeons with less than 5 years in practice. The program focuses offering mentorship in a variety of areas including career development, research goals, work-life balance, practice development, transition to practice, and leadership development. Mentees are paired with the best possible mentor who is an established female Fellow of the College. The mentorship program is 1-year in duration, beginning in October each year and concluding the following October.

The WiSC Mentorship Program opens application in early Spring of each year for mentees and mentors. The Program includes a maximum of 30 mentor/mentee pairs. Applicants for mentorship must be an ACS Fellow or Associate Fellows, or currently in the process of applying for ACS Fellowship with less than 5-years of practice. Mentor applicants must be an established ACS female Fellow of the College with experience and knowledge in various areas of mentorship outlined above to mentor an early career surgeon.

The Program includes monthly-quarterly 1:1 meetings between the mentor and mentee focused on the mentee goal plan, requirement to attend a minimum of 2 virtual gatherings with the entire Program cohort and the Program kickoff event.

Application Process

The application portal opens in early Spring. Please check back in February/March 2021 for access to the application portal. Applications are due May 31, 2021.

The application requests basic demographic information for all applications and includes the following for specific applicant categories:

  • Mentees: Ranking your mentorship area preferences (listed above) and providing a short statement (500 words max) on why you are seeking mentorship and any additional information to know when reviewing your application for matching.
  • Mentors: Identifying mentorship areas (listed above) that you have experience and knowledge and a short statement on why you want to be a mentor and any additional information to know when matching you with a mentee.

Notification

All applicants will be notified no later than July 2021 regarding their participation in the program.
