American College Of Surgeons - Inspiring Quality: Highest Standards, Better Outcomes

Martin Memorial Lecture Presenter (Established 1946)

The Martin Memorial Lecture honors the memory of Franklin H. Martin, MD, FACS, who was the driving force in the founding of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) by surgeons from the United States and Canada in 1913. This Lecture, which is sponsored by the American Urological Association, and presented during the official Opening Ceremony of the annual ACS Clinical Congress, has been delivered by various Nobel laureates, scientists, scholars, and authors from here and abroad, as well as educators and statesmen on topics of wide general interest related to medicine or public policy. Speaker selection alternates between the BOR Honors Committee and the ACS Advisory Council for Urology.

The 2020 Martin Memorial Lecture speaker will be Dr. Norman “Ned” Edward Sharpless, the current Director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Sharpless was appointed to this position in June 2017, taking office in October 2017. Recently, he also served as Acting Commissioner of Food and Drugs for the Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Sharpless was Chair and Director of the University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Molecular Therapeutics and Genetics and the UNC Wellcome Distinguished Professor in Cancer Research and Professor of Medicine before departing to join the NCI.
