Icon in Surgery Nomination Form

The American College of Surgeons' Committee on Video-based Education (VBE) is seeking nominations for Icons in Surgery recipients. The Icons in Surgery are honored during a dedicated VBE session at Clinical Congress.

How to Nominate

Fellows of the College are encouraged to submit nominations for individuals that fit the criteria associated with the specific award or honor for consideration by the VBE Committee. Please consider diversity in terms of gender, race and ethnicity when submitting nominations.

The VBE Committee convenes annually during Clinical Congress. Following this meeting, the Icons in Surgery recipients for the coming year are selected.

Important Notes:

  • While nominations are highly valued, they do not guarantee selection.
  • Nominations can only be submitted by Fellows of the College.
  • Only Fellows of the College are eligible to be nominated.

Criteria for Icons

  • Remarkable surgeons who have made significant contributions to surgical innovation
  • Demonstrated a career of improving patient care
  • Advanced the surgical profession through broad-reaching contributions
  • Surgeons who have had a global impact
  • Shaped careers across generations through teaching and mentoring
  • People who have contributed to the legacy of surgery
  • Inspirations not only as humans, but as pioneers of the surgical world

Process for Submitting Nominations

Nominations for the following year are due November 1. Completion of the Nomination Form will require the following:

  • Contact information for the nominator and nominee
  • Uploading of a letter of support which list accomplishments of the nominee and how they meet the criteria for the honor
  • Uploading of a current curriculum vitae of the nominee
  • Uploading of a short biography of the nominee
  • Please keep the nomination confidential from the proposed nominee

Champion Nominations/Responsibilities

Each Icon in Surgery nomination also requires nominating a Champion who will work to create the video honoring the Icon’s career. We encourage anyone nominating an Icon in Surgery to also consider serving as that Icon’s Champion. Responsibilities of Champions include:

  • Scheduling and leading the Icon in Surgery interview
    • Gathering photos from the Icon’s life to include in the final video
    • Working with Big Shoulders (third-party vendor) to edit the video

The Icons in Surgery videos are labors of love and they require extensive work. Champions should prepare to put in plenty of extra hours working on these videos.

Please view our website for a complete listing of past Icons in Surgery recipients.
