AIS2015 Course

Two Day Course
Wednesday, November 29 and Thursday, November 30, 2023

Pre-Requisite: A minimum of 6 months experience working with AIS either in a trauma registry or coding of injury cases; basic anatomy course or equivalent; basic medical terminology course or equivalent.

Course Overview: Upon completion of this course, the participant will:

  1. Understand the structure, organization, contents of the Abbreviated Injury Scale
  2. Identify injury data from medical records
  3. Assign the most appropriate AIS code based on the documentation within the medical record
  4. Apply AIS rules and guidelines specific to each body region
  5. Apply rules for and understanding how to calculate the Injury Severity Score (ISS) for multiple body region injuries

Clinical Documentation for AIS Workshop

Pre-Requisite: Limited to those responsible for diagnosing and documenting within the patient’s medical record or in an autopsy report. (Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Radiologists, Coroner/Medical Examiner, Pathologist)
This course is not for Trauma Data Managers/Registrars, etc.

Course Overview: Upon completion of this workshop, the participant will:

  1. Define AIS codes and development of ISS
  2. Discuss the impact of documentation, application of scientific knowledge for optimal AIS Coding
  3. Evaluate the effect of accurate AIS coding on performance improvement initiatives, validation of trauma registry data and research
  4. Identify the impact of accurate AIS coding on TQIP and ACS survey parameters

Trauma Outcomes & Performance Improvement Course (TOPIC)

The STN TOPIC course is taught to all members of the trauma system team who participate in the ongoing assessment, evaluation, and improvement of trauma care. The Society of Trauma Nurses has developed the "Trauma Outcomes and Performance Improvement Course" in response to the need for education and better understanding of the Performance Improvement process in trauma care. TOPIC focuses on the ongoing assessment of the continuum of trauma care with a structured review of process and discussions of strategies to monitor trauma patient outcomes.

The TOPIC course is taught in a one-day interactive Modular Format, customized to best meet the needs of the individual trauma care provider participants who have varying levels of experience with trauma performance improvement. The course offers practical application for all Levels of trauma centers, from entry level to mature phase of program development. The Modules are taught with a focus on didactic, operational definitions, sample tools, case study examples and take-home points.

Trauma Registry Course

The TRC is rooted in engagement and practical application strategies. All course materials are designed to augment experience and provide the student with the most current national standard definitions, and methodologies essential to a comprehensive trauma registry. Course content features: ICD-10, Updates to National Trauma Data Bank, ACS TQIP Best Practice Guidelines, Scenario Based Chart Abstraction, etc.
