Katharine Yao, MD


Dr. Katharine Yao is currently chief of the division of surgical oncology and vice chair of research in the department of surgery at NorthShore University HealthSystem. She was promoted last year to clinical professor of surgery for the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

Dr. Yao has written more than 70 papers and been a principal investigator on 11 grants. She is currently a member of the editorial boards for the Journal of Surgical Oncology and the Annals of Surgical Oncology. She has won numerous research awards including a merit award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, a Young Investigator award from the Sentinel Node Society, and a Surgical Enrichment Award from the Central Surgical Society. Recently she was awarded the Excellence in Research Award from the NorthShore Scientific Society and the Distinguished Service Award for Specialty Care from the NorthShore Medical Group.

Dr. Yao is Chair of the Quality Committee of the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers and serves on numerous other committees within the Society of Surgical Oncology, the Alliance Cooperative Group for Clinical Trials, and the American College of Surgeons. She will be Program Chair for the American Society of Breast Surgeon meeting in April 2019. She has worked extensively on the National Cancer Database (NCDB) and was the principal investigator for the alpha and beta phases of the public use file for the NCDB. She also received a grant to start the breast high-risk program from the North Suburban Healthcare Foundation. Her research interests are in building quality measures for breast cancer care in the United States, monitoring surgical treatment trends for breast cancer, genomic markers for contralateral breast cancer and surgical decision making for breast cancer.
