Dr. Richard W. Reitherman is currently the medical director of the Orange Coast Breast Center of the MemorialCare Health System, Fountain Valley, CA.

Dr. Reitherman received his doctorate in neuroscience from the University of California, San Diego. He was offered a post-doctoral fellowship at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California to study cell surface receptor molecules that mediate organ-specific metastasis. He earned his medical degree from the University of Southern California (USC) School of Medicine, and then completed his internship in internal medicine as well as his residency in diagnostic radiology at Los Angeles County USC Medical Center.

He has published many peer-reviewed articles in addition to abstracts, editorials, and presented at conferences nationally and internationally. He served on the board of directors and as chairman of the American Society of Breast Disease (ASBD) Specialty Training Committee. In addition, he was a member of the ASBD Screening Guidelines Committee (2005), and the first ASBD Breast MRI Consensus Committee that was held in 2004. He currently serves on the NAPBC Board of Directors and is an NAPBC Education Committee Member.

He has provided expert testimony and consultation in several states dealing with the Patient Dense Breast Notification Laws and has been successful in their operational implementation in California breast centers.

His clinical/research interest is focused on the strategic and practical implementation of standardized work flow algorithms for breast cancer screening based on individual risk profiling including breast density and the effective use of dense breast mitigating technologies.
