American College Of Surgeons - Inspiring Quality: Highest Standards, Better Outcomes

Recommendations for Prioritization, Treatment & Triage of Breast Cancer Patients During COVID-19

About two weeks ago the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) began fielding questions regarding who should be prioritized for operations during the pandemic. Leadership proposed that as a service to our accredited centers, we develop a set of guidelines to be considered. It quickly became apparent to us that our recommendations needed to be multidisciplinary in nature and cover the continuum of care for patients with breast abnormalities, including cancer. It also became obvious that such a set of guidelines would be more powerful coming from a consortium of groups involved in the care of cancer patients.

Members of NAPBC, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, Commission on Cancer, the National Cooperative Cancer Network and the American College of Radiology collaborated to produce an Executive Summary that preceded the manuscript, Recommendations for Prioritization, Treatment and Triage of Breast Cancer Patients During the COVID-19 Pandemic, that was just accepted for publication in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment. Please utilize this updated manuscript in place of the Executive Summary we previously sent to you. We wanted to get the paper to you as soon as possible and will alert you when it is published both online and in print. We hope that this resource helps with some of the difficult decisions that you all are facing. We are considering an update. Additionally, there has been one American College of Surgeons webinar, and others are being planned through this consortium. We will let you know about those.

Stay healthy and safe during these uncertain times. Let us know how we can help.
