American College Of Surgeons - Inspiring Quality: Highest Standards, Better Outcomes

Cancer Quality Improvement Program (CQIP 2019) Released

The National Cancer Database (NCDB) is pleased to announce the 2019 Annual Cancer Quality Improvement Program (CQIP) Report has been released. CQIP is a data-driven, process and outcomes-based cancer quality improvement initiative.
This annual report is unique in providing not only short-term quality and outcome data but also long-term outcome data including five-year survival rates for commonly treated malignancies stratified by stage. CQIP allows programs to assess their quality and outcomes based on the data submitted to the NCDB. CQIP provides Commission on Cancer (CoC)-accredited facilities with data on:

  • Compliance with CoC-adopted quality measures
  • Volume data for complex surgical oncology operations with 30-day and 90-day mortality
  • Unadjusted and risk-adjusted survival data for selected cancer sites
  • Other clinical data and administrative data

CoC recommendations on the use of the CQIP Report:

  • The Cancer Liaison Physician should present the CQIP report to the Cancer Committee with a focus on areas of concern or where expected performance is not being met and lead a discussion on recommendations for interventions to improve cancer care.
  • The Cancer Committee leadership should present the report, major findings and recommendations to hospital leadership, including, but not limited to, CEO, COO, CMO, CNO, and bodies such as the Medical Staff Executive Committee, the hospital Quality Committee, etc.

The 2019 CQIP report includes slides on:

  • Cancer Program Volume
  • Cancer Program In/Out Migration
  • CoC Quality Measure Reports
  • Volume of Selected Complex Cancer Operations
  • 30 and 90-Day Mortality after selected cancer operations
  • Unadjusted Survival Reports by stage for breast, colon and non-small cell lung cancer (NCSCLC)
  • Risk-Adjusted Survival hazard ratios by stage for breast, colon, and NSCLC
  • Site-specific reports for breast, colon, NSCLC, prostate and melanoma of the skin cancers
  • Twenty-three quality measure reports for 10 disease sites: Bladder(3), Breast(6), Cervix(3), Colon(2), Endometrium (2), Gastric(1), Kidney(1), Non-Small Cell Lung(3), Ovary(1) and Rectum(1).

A complete CQIP Slide Directory is in the About CQIP tab of the CQIP reporting application.
