Welcome Message from ACS Cancer Programs Medical Director Heidi Nelson, MD, FACS

Making a Difference

Heidi Nelson, MD, FACSWelcome everyone to the 2020 Fall Commission on Cancer (CoC) meetings. This is always a special time of the year when we come together and express our gratitude to the CoC leaders who have guided the programs and to all of you who have worked together to make a difference in cancer care through the efforts of the CoC and your accredited cancer program. This year we would like to put in an extra measure of thanks to all of you for extraordinary contributions you have made in order to make cancer care safe during the pandemic. Thank you!

This year we regret we cannot gather in person and know that we will miss the human connections that motivate and inspire our work. On the bright side, we hope that without travel and cost barriers perhaps many more of you will be able to attend the meetings. We welcome all of you to attend the Cancer Liaison Physicians (CLP) Meeting and the CoC Plenary Session to learn about progress being made in virtual site visits, accreditation standards, the Rapid Cancer Reporting System (RCRS) and synoptic operative reports.

The Cancer Liaison Physicians Meeting, scheduled for Thursday, October 22 from 3:30 - 5:00 pm Central Time, will include an overview of resources and best practices to support CLPs in their role within their CoC-accredited cancer programs. Topics will include updates on site visits and survey results, standards 2.2, 7.1, and 7.3, as well as some CLP success stories and CLP resources.

The CoC Plenary Session, scheduled for Friday, October 30 from 1:30 - 4:00 pm Central Time, will highlight the current priorities of the CoC and how the CoC is working to bring value and support CoC-accredited cancer programs. Topics will include a presentation on “Reflections on the role of the CoC in advancing cancer care in the US and its role in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic,” delivered by Dr. Shulman, the outgoing chair, and the vision and goals of Dr. Mullett, the incoming chair. There will be updates on standards, site visit scheduling, and virtual site visits, as well as updates on RCRS and quality measures. Paper competition winners will be announced, and elections and recognitions will take place.

Please plan to attend to help us celebrate our successes and bring a question or two to share as there will be time for Q&A.
