American College Of Surgeons - Inspiring Quality: Highest Standards, Better Outcomes

Chapter 2: Clinical Services

About the Standards in Chapter 2

The College of American Pathologists (CAP) Protocols are addressed in Standard 2.1. The Commission on Cancer (CoC) requires that at least 90% of all pathology reports from cancer specimens include the required data elements from the CAP Protocols to achieve CoC accreditation.

Risk Assessment and Genetic Counseling are covered in Standard 2.3. All programs are required to provide cancer risk assessment as well as genetic counseling and testing, on-site or by referral, by a qualified genetics professional.

Standard 2.4 describes the provision of palliative care. All cancer programs, except NCIP, must provide palliative care, either onsite or by referral.
