Weekly Special Study Update: Recurrence Information and Webinars

Thank you for all of your hard work to date on the special study. We appreciate your participation in the webinars and all of the thorough and insightful questions received.

Recurrence Information

Please note: Some instructions for the Special Study are different from what is required for the registry. Please only record biochemical recurrence if the physician specifically states this recurrence in the clinical notes. Biochemical recurrence should only be recorded in the date of first recurrence detection by any method. Do not count biochemical recurrence as a local, regional, or distant recurrence unless it meets the following definitions.

  • Local recurrence is defined as recurrence in the prostate or prostate bed.
    • This is defined by biopsy of the prostate or prostate bed, and pathology from this biopsy showing recurrent prostate cancer. Date of local recurrence should be the date of this biopsy.
    • Alternatively, if biopsy is not done or information not available, local recurrence in the prostate or prostate bed can be defined using imaging (date of local recurrence is the date of imaging scan)
  • Regional nodes are nodes of the true pelvis, which essentially are the pelvic nodes below the bifurcation of the common iliac arteries. They include the following groups: pelvic NOS, hypogastric, obturator, iliac (internal, external, NOS), sacral (lateral, presacral, promontory [Gerota’s] or NOS).
  • Distant recurrence/metastasis is recurrence that is not local and not regional.

The same link can be used to register for all weekly webinars. All webinars will be the same day and time each week, Tuesdays at 11:00 am (CST).

Note: Starting June 27, webinars will be 30 minutes long and worth 0.5 credits of NCRA CE. Webinars are cancelled the week of July 4 and July 11.

While it will cover some of the same points as the previous webinar, the content of the future webinars will be different and will go over many of the registrar questions received to date.

The recordings and presentations for the special study webinars can be accessed on the Special Study webpage. The NCRA numbers and amount of CE are also posted. All webinars so far have been 1.0 credits of CE. Registrars do not need to attend at the time of the webinar to receive credit; you will be able to get credit for webinars if you view the recording after the fact.

Thank you again for your participation and time. Your work will be integral to understanding how patients with prostate cancer should be optimally followed up following the treatment of their cancer. We couldn’t do this without you! Send any questions to specialstudy@facs.org or call 312-202-5685.
