Keeping in mind that the use of data should always be the ultimate driver of rules for coding, this introduction to Version 2.0 of the “CTR Guide to Coding Radiation Therapy” focuses on why this data is collected and how it will be used. We discuss experience-driven changes to the STORE, coding guidelines, and the content in this guide, in which the number of case studies has more than doubled compared to Version 1.0. We review a summary of general rules of coding radiation, discuss and illustrate selected new cases, and review available options when you don’t know how to code a case.

The data items describing radiation oncology treatment have not been modified for several years and limited the ability to capture new and more specific data which affect both the ability to analyze and report treatment results and patient outcomes. The new radiation oncology fields released in STORE make the data more relevant and easier to capture in cancer registry databases.

New and Improved: Updates to STORE

Beginning in 2021, the Standards for Oncology Registry Entry (STORE) will change to reflect current diagnosis and treatment practices. The presentation will share details on new and updated data items and their application to ensure accurate and consistent coding of cancer registry information. In addition, the presentation will review the data items that have been retired from STORE and will no longer be collected by the NCDB.
