Congress Holds Hearings on Opioid-Related Legislation

Congress continues to address the opioid epidemic as a priority issue, and over the last two weeks, the House Energy and Commerce and Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committees have held two hearings on the issue. These hearings have focused on ways to address the opioid epidemic through legislation and the use of data and technology.

The Senate HELP Committee hosted a hearing February 27 on the use of data and technology to assist in identifying intentional and unintentional prescribing discrepancies and ways technology can enhance a state’s prescription drug monitoring program. The House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee held the first in a series of hearings February 28 to discuss eight opioid-related legislative proposals. The bills that were discussed covered topics from mandated Continuing Medical Education for prescribers to criminal enforcement for the production/trafficking of synthetic opioids.

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) continues to be actively involved in monitoring opioid-related legislative activities on Capitol Hill. For more information about opioid policy, contact Justin Rosen, ACS Congressional Lobbyist, at
