ACS Responds to Senate Finance Committee Request for Input on the Opioid Epidemic

Last week, the American College of Surgeons (ACS) answered a request from the Senate Finance Committee for information regarding the opioid epidemic. Our response included a comprehensive outline of the College’s work on patient and provider opioid-related education and examples of how to best address the epidemic.

Overall, the letter reiterated the points of the ACS Statement on the Opioid Abuse Epidemic, which calls for the establishment of fully functioning and interoperable prescription drug monitoring programs, the ability for prescribers to electronically prescribe opioids, and the development of specialty-specific opioid-related Continuing Medical Education programs.

The ACS will continue to work with Congress to find a solution to the opioid epidemic while limiting the legislative and administrative burdens placed on physicians.
