ACS Comments on Payor Price Transparency Proposed Rule

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) submitted a comment letter to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) January 29 in response to the agency’s Transparency in Coverage proposed rule. In this rule, CMS specifically sought feedback on approaches to make health care price information accessible to consumers.

In its letter, the College offered guidance to CMS on methods to enhance the usability and accuracy of cost-sharing data private payors present to their enrollees. The ACS recommended the following: price information should reflect both the cost of an entire episode of care, as well as patient-specific insurance benefits; payors should be required to notify consumers about any prerequisites to coverage in a timely manner; and payors’ online self-service tools should be configured to allow users to search for cost-sharing information for a given item or service using various refining functionalities, such as physician network status, specialty, and quality rating. The College also highlighted its collaboration with the PACES Center for Value in Healthcare to create an environment of greater price transparency for patients by developing standard definitions for episodes of care that allow for aligning cost and quality information across payors.

Nominations for ACS Board of Regents, Officers-Elect Due February 21

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) 2020 Nominating Committee of the Fellows (NCF) and the Nominating Committee of the Board of Governors (NCBG) will be selecting nominees for leadership positions in the College. The deadline for submitting nominations is February 21, 2020.

The 2020 NCF will select nominees for the three Officer-Elect positions of the ACS:

  • President-Elect
  • First Vice-President-Elect
  • Second Vice-President-Elect

The 2020 NCBG will select nominees for pending vacancies on the Board of Regents to be filled at Clinical Congress 2020. Nominations are open to surgeons of all specialties, but particular consideration will be given this nomination cycle to Fellows in the following specialties:

  • Burns and critical care surgery
  • Gastrointestinal surgery
  • General surgery
  • Surgical oncology
  • Transplant surgery
  • Trauma surgery
  • Vascular surgery

Application and Nomination Period for ACS Academy of Master Surgeons Educators 2020 Class Now OpenAcademy of Master Surgeon Educators

Applications for Membership, Associate Membership, and Affiliate Membership are now being accepted for the third application cycle of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Academy of Master Surgeon Educators. Nominations will be accepted until March 20, 2020, and applications will be accepted through April 3, 2020.

Developed by the ACS Division of Education, the mission of the Academy is to play a leadership role in advancing the science and practice of education across all surgical specialties, promoting the highest achievements in the lifetimes of surgeons.

The Academy’s goals include the following:

  • Defining megatrends in surgical education and training
  • Steering advances in the field
  • Fostering innovation and collaboration
  • Providing mentorship
  • Underscoring the critical importance of surgical education in the changing milieu of health care

Induction into the Academy is a high honor, and membership carries with it the responsibility to “give back” by supporting the mission and goals of the Academy and participating in Academy-sponsored programs and activities.
