Call for Nominations: Liaison Positions to the Board of Governor Diversity Pillar Workgroups

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) is seeking applications from Fellows of the College who are 45 years of age or younger who are interested in serving YFA as a liaison to a Board of Governor Workgroup under the Diversity Pillar.

Two liaison positions will be filled, one liaison representing YFA on each of the following workgroups:

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives Workgroup

Surgical Workforce Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Workgroup

  • Nominees should be Fellows of the College and able to serve a full three-year term, starting in June 2021 and ending in October 2024, while remaining in YFA (under the age of 45)
  • Submit a letter of interest stating why you feel you are suited for the position (two pages or fewer) and an executive/abbreviated curriculum vitae (two pages or fewer)

Applications will be accepted online through April 1 at 5:00 pm CT. No exceptions allowed.

Submit Your Essay for the YFA Communications Committee Contest by May 15

The YFA is accepting essays, 500–1,000 words in length, covering the theme, "Starting 2021 Off Right—Positive Lessons Learned from a Pandemic and How Medicine Has Pushed Forward” through May 15 (deadline extended).

Essays may reflect personal experiences or philosophical thoughts on the topic. The YFA Communications Committee will review and judge all submitted essays. The winning entry will be published in the October issue of the Bulletin of the American College of Surgeons. Outstanding submissions will appear in future quarterly YFA newsletters.

Dr. Mary Edwards Walker Inspiring Women in Surgery Award Call for Nominations Due May 28

The American College of Surgeons Women in Surgery Committee (WiSC) is pleased to announce the call for nominations for the annual Dr. Mary Edwards Walker Inspiring Women in Surgery Award to be presented during Clinical Congress 2021.

The award will be presented in recognition of an individual’s significant contributions to the advancement of women in the field of surgery. Individuals for consideration must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Nominees must have demonstrated a commitment to the advancement and inspiration of women in surgery
  • Nominees must be members of the American College of Surgeons, either in active practice or retired
  • Current members of the WiSC are not eligible to be nominated for this award

Call for Mentors and Mentees for the WiSC Mentorship Program Due May 14

The American College of Surgeons is seeking applications from women surgeons who would like to participate in the Women in Surgery Committee Mentorship Program.

Applications are being accepted for mentors and mentees. Participation as a mentee is an opportunity for early-career female surgeons to develop a mentoring relationship with established surgeons practicing in all specialties represented within the ACS. Participation as a mentor is an opportunity for established surgeons with 10 or more years in practice to share their knowledge, expertise, and experience in professional and personal development. Applicants to the program must be ACS Fellows, Associate Fellows, or currently in the process of applying for ACS Fellowship.

Call for Applications: Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine Fellowship in Diagnostic Excellence

A Call for Applications for the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM) Fellowship in Diagnostic Excellence is open until April 6. Funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, this fellowship will enhance the fellows’ knowledge and skills in diagnostic quality and safety, match them with experienced mentors and recognized leaders in the field of diagnostic error, connect them to the diagnostic error community, and help them develop and implement their own research project.
