YFA E-News: June 2017

Message from the YFA E-News Editor

Joe DuBoseWe hope that this edition of the YFA E-News finds all of the Young Fellows of the American College Surgeons well as we move into the summer months! Your YFA Governing Council met at the recent Leadership & Advocacy Summit in Washington, DC, expanding upon plans to get more and more of our fellow YFA partners actively engaged in the activities of the ACS. This newsletter outlines more of the ways in which you can be involved and some of the benefits of your YFA membership.

Reminder to all that the Annual Clinical Congress will be upon us before you know it! It looks like it will be a great meeting in San Diego, and we look forward to seeing you all there! Start planning your week with us now!  More information can be found on the ACS website.

As always, don’t hesitate to contact us if we can help you in any way!

Notes from the Member Services Workgroup

The Member Services Workgroup of the Young Fellows Association seeks to ensure that the Young Fellows of the American College of Surgeons are able to engage in the College in a productive and meaningful fashion. In a practical sense, the Member Services Committee maintains the YFA Bylaws (suggesting revisions if needed), solicits nominations and helps to fill vacancies for open positions, and interacts with State Chapters to facilitate Young Fellow involvement. While these activities seem quite internally focused, they are important to ensure that the YFA is able to serve its members in an efficient and effective fashion.

Joshua MammenThe YFA is afforded the opportunity to have representation on most Advisory Councils and committees of the Board of Governors. Very often, these groups ask for advice from the younger surgeon perspective. In this manner, younger practicing surgeons are able to help guide the College in its decision making process on critical issues and topics. Additionally, YFA members are given the opportunity to meet College leadership and participate in the decision making process. The YFA Governing Council works hard to ensure that this process is both transparent and fair.

While the larger ACS organization is instrumental in creating important education products, advancing quality, and engaging in advocacy at the national level, most YFA members interact with the College more regularly through its chapters. For that reason, the YFA works to ensure that there is a younger surgeon representative to each Chapter. Additionally, we are working to ensure that this representative has concrete contributions that he/she can provide to the Chapter.

The Member Services Committee collaborates with the other committees of the YFA to create programs and generate value for young Fellows. We always seek out ways to better serve the YFA. Please feel free to contact me at if you have any ideas or suggestions.
