Recounting a Successful YFA Experience

The YFA Annual Meeting and Governing Council at Clinical Congress: Regrouping, Retooling, and a Focused Agenda of Communication met in two well-attended sessions at the Clinical Congress. The first session was a closed meeting of the YFA Governing Council, where a packed agenda of items occupied council members for an entire morning. Outgoing-Chair Jacob Moalem, MD, FACS, spoke on the significant progress made towards goals in advocacy, education, membership, and communication with the main board. Under his leadership, the Governing Council enacted changes in all these areas and met with significant successes.

Incoming-Chair Joshua Broghammer, MD, FACS, discussed key initiatives to bolster workgroups within the Governing Council to carry the load of each initiative over the course of the year.

The Communications Workgroup met to streamline its objectives under the leadership of Chair Dr. James Suliburk. Key objectives outlined in this first planning session included the preparation and distribution of a quarterly electronic newsletter in addition to initiatives to strengthen connections between members of the YFA and Resident and Associate Society of the American College of Surgeons (RAS-ACS). The connection between early initiates into the ACS and RAS-ACS members is a very important way to ensure the YFA is fed with the most active individuals destined for future leadership roles in the ACS. To this end, the YFA Communications Workgroup is working to increase awareness of the YFA at Clinical Congress.

As part of the exciting YFA program, members attended a cozy session with ACS President Dr. Townsend. His presidential theme, “Doing What’s Right for the Patient,” was discussed in detail. The session was followed by an informal meet and greet between members of the YFA and new initiates. The conversation focused on several issues ranging from the presidential theme of being upstanding in the service of others to the new directives undertaken by the YFA Governing Council.

In all, the YFA presence continues to grow at Clinical Congress. Several workgroups are available for young Fellows to engage and build their networks. The Communications Workgroup in particular will be in the spotlight over the coming months with initiatives aimed at connecting and uniting members interested in getting involved.
