Essay Submissions: “Transitioning to Mid-Practice”

Light bulbThe Young Fellows Association (YFA) is accepting essays through May 3. Essays should be 500 to 1,000 words in length and cover the theme of “Transitioning to Mid-Practice.” Essays may reflect personal experiences or philosophical thoughts on the topic. The YFA Communications Committee will review and judge all of the submitted essays. The winning entry will be published in the October issue of the Bulletin of the American College of Surgeons. Outstanding submissions will appear in future YFA e-newsletters.

While guidance and resources are abundantly available for career development and growth of young surgeons at the beginning of their careers, there isn’t much support available for young surgeons when they transition to mid-career. Perhaps because it is assumed that once one is beyond the early-career phase, one has already learned the basics of career development. As it turns out, most of us need continued guidance and career advice throughout our careers. Essays should focus on your transition from early-career to mid-career surgery, how smooth it has been, and if there is anything you wish you had known during the initial years of your career.

The YFA represents all ACS Fellows age 45 and younger and seeks essays from surgeons in this age group as well as those who are “young at heart.”

Thank you for all you do.

Volunteer Opportunities through ACS

Operation Giving BackThank you for your care, concern, and commitment to volunteering amid the COVID-19 global health crisis.

As you may know, many states have recognized the need for additional aide and have called on volunteer health care professionals to serve in their communities during this unprecedented time. As a result, licenses have been expedited and temporarily reinstated, telehealth policies and policies for practicing in different states have loosened, and state volunteer portals have been created to streamline workforce reentry.

We encourage you to review the American College of Surgeons (ACS) COVID-19 State Volunteer Resources page to learn where you are able to implement your skill sets based on these temporary policy changes. Should you participate in volunteerism efforts, Hilton and American Express have partnered to create the Frontline Medical Professionals Room Program and will donate up to 1 million free hotel nights to medical professionals, which means ACS members in good standing can have a safe and welcoming place to stay as they support those impacted by COVID-19. To book a room, first log in to your My Profile account. The link can be found in the left-hand navigation on your page under “My Hilton Partnership.” For additional details, please reference the FAQ: Hilton and American Express Rooms Donation page.

If you do move forward with volunteering, please notify Operation Giving Back at ogb@facs.org.
