American College Of Surgeons - Inspiring Quality: Highest Standards, Better Outcomes

Michael SarapLetter from the Editor

Michael D. Sarap, MD, FACS
Governor, Ohio Chapter
Editor, The Cutting Edge: News and Notes from the Board of Governors

This edition of The Cutting Edge: News and Notes from the Board of Governors will be my final submission as editor. In the spring of 2013, I was assigned to this position as part of the reorganization of the structure and duties of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Along with the Survey Workgroup, the Newsletter Workgroup is part of the Communication Pillar. We were handed the reins of this regularly published newsletter sent to all Governors and Regents and put together mostly by the staff of the ACS. Over the last three years, our workgroup has produced quarterly editions of a completely revamped newsletter with content for the Governors, about the Governors, and mostly written and submitted by the Governors. We have added several interesting regular columns that cover coding and reimbursement tips, information about the College, the history of surgical leadership, introductions of International Governors, stories about ACS Chapters and Fellows, hot topics from the ACS Communities, coverage of major ACS meetings, and reports from the ACS Divisions, Pillars, and Workgroups. We changed the format to make it more pleasing to the eye and easier to browse. We changed the name to The Cutting Edge. The next major improvement will allow content to be accessed and viewed on any digital device.

I would like to sincerely thank the members of the Newsletter Workgroup, the leadership of the Communication Pillar, and other Pillar members, all of whom have helped to make The Cutting Edge an entertaining, meaningful, and informative product. I would also thank each of the Fellows, domestic and international, who have contributed articles for the many editions. I entered this position with no journalism experience and am eternally grateful to Betty Sanders, Senior Administrator in the ACS Division of Member Services, who in great part is truly the reason for the success of The Cutting Edge. Without her professional and knowledgeable assistance the workgroup and its leadership would be lost.

This last three years as editor have been an interesting and rewarding experience that has allowed me to form many new friendships and relationships with ACS Fellows all over the world, interact with College leadership and staff at the highest levels, and come to a much clearer understanding of the workings and the real value of the American College of Surgeons.

The Governors, Fellows, and College activities featured in The Cutting Edge truly support the notion that surgeons make a real and meaningful difference every single day in the lives of their patients, their communities, and their entire countries. Every single Fellow of the American College of Surgeons deserves to be highlighted and congratulated for his or her individual and collective achievements and successes. I take this final opportunity as editor to leave each of you with a parting thought:

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”—Ralph Waldo Emerson
