American College Of Surgeons - Inspiring Quality: Highest Standards, Better Outcomes

In Memoriam: Ricardo Sonneborn

Ricardo Sonneborn

Ricardo Sonneborn, MD, FACS, passed away on October 22, 2016. Dr. Sonneborn was an outstanding vascular surgeon and a member of the College since 1973. He was President of the ACS Chilean Chapter in 1985 and Governor from 1995 to 2001.

In his professional trajectory, he stands out for his commitment to the introduction and development of trauma management in Chile and Latin America. Dr. Sonneborn, with the support of Gerald Strauch, MD, FACS, and other ACS trauma surgeons, introduced the Advanced Trauma Life Support® (ATLS®) course in Chile in 1986 and spread it to other South American countries.

Dr. Sonneborn was appointed to several prominent positions, including Chief of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (COT) Region XIV from 1987 to 1995, Vice-President of the Trauma Society, Chief of the Committee of Trauma FELAC, and others. He received many awards, including the Master of Chilean Surgery in 2009 and Meritorious Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma in 2013, among others.

He is survived by his wife, Cristina; his two sons, Ricardo and Karin; and six grandchildren.

The ACS Chilean Chapter has lost a great leader, one who has left a legacy in trauma care. His dedication will always be remembered.

We thank Juan Hepp, MD, FACS, Governor-at-Large, Chile Chapter, for this contribution.
