Clinical Congress Highlights

Take Advantage of Programming for Associate Fellows and Residents

The RAS-ACS welcomes Associate Fellows and Resident members to join us for programming especially relevant to the needs of young surgeons and surgeons-in-training at Clinical Congress 2017, October 22–26 in San Diego, CA.

Make sure to mark your calendar for the RAS-ACS Symposium on Sunday, October 22, 3:00–5:30 pm. During the symposium, young surgeons and experienced surgeons will debate such issues as: What should surgical leadership look like in the 21st century? Should we strive for a seat at the table of business, policy, and politics? Or should we strengthen our commitment to direct patient care, surgical education, and research?

Check out additional offerings for Residents and Associate Fellows.

Participate in Chapter Speed Networking at Clinical Congress 2017

Connecting to your local chapter is a great way to network and stay connected in your local surgical community.  Please consider attending Chapter Speed Networking during Clinical Congress. It will be held on October 23, 3:00–5:00 pm, at the Marriott Marquis, San Diego Ballroom, Salon A, Lobby Level.

One of the networking tables will cover “Incorporating RAS onto Your Chapter Council” and RAS-ACS Chair Nicolas J. Mouawad, MD, MPH, MBA, and Advocacy and Issues Committee Secretary Christopher McNicoll, MD, will be present. Interested RAS-ACS members are welcome to attend to share their success stories in this area or learn from other members about how their local chapters accommodate RAS members on their council.

Committee on Perioperative Care Hosts Ravdin Lecture at Clinical Congress 2017

The Committee on Perioperative Care (CPC) is sponsoring the Ravdin lecturer at Clinical Congress 2017. John Alverdy, MD, FACS, is the featured speaker on the red-hot topic of the impact of the microbiome on surgical outcomes. His lecture is titled Microbiome Medicine—This Changes Everything and takes place Monday, October 23, 4:15–5:00 pm at the San Diego Convention Center in room 5AB.

The CPC is also soliciting members for a proposed panel session for Clinical Congress 2018 titled Teaching and Assessing Autonomy in the Operating Room. Topics include encouraging trainee autonomy and independent decision making, assessing the level of autonomy, how to train faculty to allow more autonomy, and how to remedy a bad outcome related to resident autonomy. If this is an area of active research for you, please contact Feibi Zheng or Luke Selby from the RAS Education Committee at RASNews@facs.org
