RAS-ACS Committee Updates

Advocacy and Issues Committee

The Advocacy and Issues Committee helps promote resident engagement in policy issues locally and nationally. Read on for information on the upcoming RAS-ACS Symposium and the recent ACS Leadership & Advocacy Summit.

RAS Symposium 2017.  We are reviewing the essay submissions from RAS members to select one panelist from the “surgeon-advocate” position and the “surgeon-scientist” position.  The Symposium will follow the Focus on RAS Leadership Session on Sunday, October 22, at the 2017 Clinical Congress in San Diego.  Please plan to attend this full day of RAS programming!

ACS Leadership & Advocacy Summit. The ACS Leadership Summit, held on May 7 in Washington, DC, was a success with high attendance and great discussions of the issues. Bhagwan Satiani, MD, FACS, vascular surgeon and innovator at Ohio State University, spoke as a guest of RAS and our committee.

Join our conference calls. We welcome your participation in our committee! Please join us on our monthly calls at 9:00 pm (EDT) on the first Wednesday of each month. E-mail RASNews@facs.org with subject line “Advocacy & Issues Committee” for information on how to call in.

Communications Committee

The Communications Committee houses a diverse set of projects that seek to enhance communication and knowledge sharing and to represent RAS across multiple social media platforms. Read on for updates on our essay contest, our August Bulletin, and our journal club.

Communications Committee Essay Contest. We are well underway on the judging of the RAS Communications Committee Essay Contest, with the topic "Be True to the Profession, Be True to Yourself.” Expect an announcement of the winning essay soon!

August Bulletin. The theme for this year’s August Bulletin is The Opioid Epidemic: Crisis, Impact and Solutions for the Surgeon, wherein each of the four standing RAS committees will approach the issue from their areas of expertise. Look for a fresh perspective on how we as surgeons can mitigate the crisis, coming in August.

RAS on Twitter. RAS is on Twitter and you can be, too. The @RASACS account is 100 percent run by members of the RAS Communications Committee. If you are an avid social media user or you want to get more exposure to the world of social media, then RAS Communications is the group for you. #SurgSocks experience not necessary, but certainly encouraged.

Get involved. On the horizon, the committee is working on a proposal to partner with SCORE to develop a series of audio podcasts to supplement the educational material that so many residents use to prepare for board certification. We do what you have read about, and so much more! We would love to have you join our group, just call in to our next conference call on the second Tuesday of each month.

Education Committee

The Education Committee promotes and advances the education of surgical residents, Fellows, and associates, and discusses novel issues in surgical education. Read on for the latest updates on the Skills Competition and Surgical Jeopardy.

Skills ACS. The Education Committee continues to work on bringing a skills competition to the Focus on RAS session at Clinical Congress 2017, supporting our initiative to spread Surgical Jeopardy to ACS Chapters as well as collaborating on education-related research and acting as a resource for other RAS committees with education-related interests or questions.

Surgical Jeopardy. The committee continues to build a database of questions for the popular and entertaining Surgical Jeopardy game at Clinical Congress, as well as for games that are distributed to local chapters. We are always looking for creative questions or categories, so e-mail your ideas to Spjeopardy@facs.org.

Our calls occur on the fourth Wednesday of every month. Please call in and join us if you can!

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee seeks to enhance communication and knowledge sharing amongst residents, Fellows, and leaders of the ACS. This month the committee addresses new promotional videos and opportunities for member involvement in videos.

RAS Video Content Subcommittee. The Membership Committee, recognizing the increasing role of video content on social media, is developing a new subcommittee to create and disseminate video content. We have gotten many great replies already, and we would love to see your ideas! If you are interested in creating content for or filming videos—whether for promotion of the RAS, updates on upcoming events and issues, or information regarding FES and other new requirements—e-mail us to get involved. Video editors to give feedback are also needed. Little to no video editing skills required! E-mail RASNews@facs.org with subject line “Video Content Subcommittee” for more information.

Medical Student page. We are developing a page for medical students as they apply for the increasingly competitive surgical specialties. We will answer the following burning questions:

  • How do I become a competitive applicant?

  • How do I budget for interviews?

  • How many people match to my specialty?

  • Where can I go with my specialty?

  • What happens if I don’t match?

To share the benefit of your knowledge with medical students, e-mail RASNews@facs.org with subject line “Medical Student Landing Page” for more information.

We look forward to hearing from you and we hope to see you at the next conference call!
