Update from the Advocacy and Issues Committee

Christopher McNicoll

Through our annual essay contest, the Advocacy and Issues Committee has selected two residents to participate as panelists at the 2019 RAS Symposium at Clinical Congress. Jessica Rea, MD, a third year resident at the University of California San Francisco East Bay general surgery residency program; and Lili Sadri, MD, a second year resident at the Abington (PA) Hospital-Jefferson Health general surgery residency program; will join Kenneth Mattox, MD, FACS; Sharmila Dissanaike, MD, FACS; and Barbara Bass, MD, FACS, on the panel. The second place authors, Venkat Ramakrishnan, MD, and Suy sen Hung Fong, MD, will also have their essays published in the ACS Bulletin. Additionally, our committee members recently completed Bulletin article submissions to outline and describe the upcoming RAS Symposium. The articles also explore the topics of wellness and resident resiliency as the training paradigm has changed over the past century. Our subcommittees are currently working on projects covering topics like firearm injury, diversity in surgical trials, payment patterns affecting GME funding, and the opioid epidemic. Join us on our conference calls on the first Wednesday of every month, or email me if you are interested in participating in any of our ongoing projects.
