American College Of Surgeons - Inspiring Quality: Highest Standards, Better Outcomes

Message from the Chair

Naveen Sangji, MDHappy New Year! On behalf of the Resident and Associate Society of the American College of Surgeons (RAS-ACS) Executive Committee, I am so pleased to welcome you to a new year of engagement with the RAS-ACS.

We have many exciting initiatives within our five standing committees (Advocacy and Issues, Associates, Communications, Education, and Membership) that I hope you choose to participate in, such as an annual leadership workshop, podcasts on educational topics, a workgroup addressing firearm safety, quality initiatives, and a global surgery workgroup. Our committees tackle challenges such as autonomy in surgical training, wellness, and electronic medical records (EMR) and administrative burden. We always welcome new ideas and count on you to bring forward topics you care about. Together, I hope we can address the key issues facing trainees and Associate Fellows of RAS-ACS.

We also offer a number of scholarships and grants each year for travel to ACS meetings such as the Leadership & Advocacy Summit in Washington, DC. This issue of the Resident Member News contains information about applications and deadlines. The issue also contains announcements for leadership opportunities within RAS-ACS, such as liaison positions to the ACS Board of Governors workgroups. We hope you will consider involvement with the College in a liaison role.

I look forward to serving you this year as the RAS-ACS Chair. I will be joined in my efforts by Raphael Sun, MD, who serves as the Vice-Chair, and Yewande Alimi, MD, the new Secretary. We are helped by the RAS-ACS administrator, Alison Powers. Please contact me, or any member of the RAS-ACS leadership, with questions, concerns, or ideas. I look forward to hearing from you.
