More than 1 Million Trained to Stop the Bleed

With more than 1.1 million people trained, Stop the Bleed® has become the flagship outreach program in bleeding control. The ACS Committee on Trauma has taken the lead in promulgating this effort, and as a result, the course is taught by more than 65,000 instructors in the U.S., and a total of 111 countries participate in the program. With more than 68,000 courses reported to date, this effort has been well received around the globe.

The ACS COT introduced a newly designed Stop the Bleed Course in late spring 2019. The development of the new course was based on feedback received from instructors and participants and reflects the changing educational needs of the program. Highlights of this new course include a reduction in the number of slides and adjusted graphics and language for general public training. This new course replaced the Bleeding Control Basics Course that was introduced in October 2016. The Stop the Bleed Course is now available in multiple languages and includes several instructional materials for download and use.

New Stop the Bleed Website Launches

At the Clinical Congress in October, the American College of Surgeons introduced the launch of the new StoptheBleed.org to the registered attendees. The goal of the new website is to provide public visitors with an experience that will inform the user about Stop the Bleed, educate them on the importance of taking a Stop the Bleed course, and empower them to take action in spreading the word in their communities. This is the first public-facing website of ACS and is the result of input from instructors, participants, and members of the general public. The new website gives quick access to information, stories, and program information. In addition to the website, new social media handles were created for interaction with instructors and the public for Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, all under @stopthebleedacs.

Stop the Bleed State Champions Introduced

Due to the significant growth of the program and the need to better support local efforts in training and outreach, we have identified Stop the Bleed (STB) State Champions for each state. These STB State Champions are registered instructors and will be able to coordinate response to local need by helping to identify and track instructors, courses, and program information. Each individual will be a local resource for questions and outreach efforts for both instructors and the general public. This new position will be paramount in the growth of the program and will give ACS the opportunity to bring Stop the Bleed to every area of the U.S. All STB State Champions will be able to contact instructors, hear about new program and initiatives, and be a resource for legislative and media matters.
