Hot Topics for Chapters

Survey of Chapter Activities for 2016

The Board of Governors Chapter Activities Domestic Workgroup has developed a survey to be completed by all domestic and international chapters to learn and share more about their activities during the 2016 calendar year. The survey was sent to chapter leadership in January, and the data collected will be used for planning purposes over the next year so that ACS resources and initiatives are targeted to areas that will be most beneficial to chapters and their members. Responses are requested no later than February 3, 2017.

Webinars

Chapter Services is working on the 2017 edition of its popular webinar series. If there are chapter management issues that you are interested in learning more about, please send them to Laura Mazur at lmazur@facs.org.

  • A printable, digital copy of the questions and answers
  • A digital copy of the handbook, which includes instructions on how to use the game flash drive and suggestions for how to set up your competition

Please e-mail Luke Moreau at lmoreau@facs.org to request a copy of Surgical Jeopardy 2.0.

Governor Audit

In a recent message from the Chair of the Board of Governors included in The Cutting Edge: News and Notes from the Board of Governors, Diana Farmer, MD, FACS, FRCS, announced that an audit was undertaken last year to evaluate the allocation of members of the Board of Governors and to address any imbalances that have occurred since the last audit. As a result, some new guidelines were suggested and approved to help clarify the conditions for an organization or chapter to gain (or lose) governor representation. Here are the new guidelines:

  • For specialty societies
Societies must have 300 members who are also active ACS Fellows.
  • For chapters
The first 500 active Fellows generate one Governor and one additional Governor for every 500 after that (for example, 501 Fellows = two governors; 1,001 Fellows = three Governors)

No current Governor will lose his or her position mid-term. Your chapter and organizational leadership will receive specific information about your representation in January 2017.

Call for Nominations for ACS Board of Regents and Officers-Elect

The 2017 Nominating Committee of the Fellows (NCF) and the Nominating Committee of the Board of Governors (NCBG) will select nominees for the Board of Regents and Officers-Elect until February 24, 2017. Further details about the nomination process can be found in the January 2017 issue of the Bulletin of the American College of Surgeons.

The Call for Abstracts and Videos for Clinical Congress 2017, October 22–26, in San Diego, CA, is now open. You may submit abstracts for the Owen H. Wangensteen Scientific Forum or videos for the Video-Based Education Sessions.

New and Improved Bylaws

We have just completed a thorough review and revision of the standard bylaws that all ACS Chapters should be using. You are requested to review the bylaws and compare them with your current bylaws. Several areas have been clarified, including the role of the ACS Governor and the role of the Chapter President. If you intend to make changes to your bylaws, those changes should be approved by your Chapter membership and submitted to Laura Mazur in the ACS office at lmazur@facs.org.
