The honors and awards our ACS-AEIs received this past year further emphasize their strength in the field of surgical simulation-based education and training at all learner levels through the excellence and innovation that take place at these centers.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, MA 

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Staff and residents in the department of surgery at Beth Israel have published a guide, Surgery Boot Camp Manual: A Multimedia Guide for Surgical Training, for medical students and surgery residents that shows you exactly what to expect in the wards and the operating room, how to behave, and how to perform many of the basic procedures you might be asked to do.

IRCAD, Strasbourg, France

IRCAD InternationalIn September 2019, the World Endoscopy Organization (WEO) recognized IRCAD as a WEO-authorized training center. This honor distinguishes IRCAD’s teaching and training activities in the field of laparoscopic endoscopy, as well as their reputation for delivering education in the field on an outstanding level. WEO presented IRCAD with plaques to display at their centers in Brazil, France, and Taiwan.

University of Texas Medical Branch Laboratory for Surgical Training, Assessment, and Research, Galveston, TX

LSTAR logoA gift of $480,000 will fund a simulation education and research fellowship under the direction of Dr. Alexander Perez, professor and chief of the division of minimally invasive and foregut surgery and surgical director of the Sealy & Smith Laboratory for Surgical Training, Assessment, and Research at UTMB.

“The award for the simulation fellowship will provide funding to sustain the work done toward education and training of physicians and leaders in surgical procedures critical to the care of COVID-19 patients, as well as other surgical procedures for physicians requiring updates in training,” the official release states.

UT Southwestern Simulation Center, Dallas, TX

UT Southwestern Simulation CenterUT Southwestern has won the Innovation in Education Award from D CEO and Dallas Innovates. The simulation center was selected from among four finalists. The inaugural Innovation Awards honor companies, entrepreneurs, and other leaders in North Texas, shining a spotlight on innovators redefining their industries and contributing to Dallas-Fort Worth’s growth. The winners from 14 categories were announced at a January 7 awards ceremony. All winners and finalists are featured in the January/February issue of D CEO magazine and online at Dallas Innovates.
