Time to Act: Surgical Care Coalition Launches Week of Action to Stop Medicare Cuts

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has proposed a rule that will devastate surgeons across America by reducing payments for nearly all surgical specialties—during the worst public health crisis in generations. Starting January 1, 2021, the proposed CMS rule will slash Medicare payments to surgeons by up to 9 percent, jeopardizing patient access to surgical care in the middle of a pandemic. To stop these cuts and preserve care for patients, Congress needs to act.

In response, the ACS, in collaboration with the Surgical Care Coalition, launched its first-ever ‘Week of Action’ September 21 to encourage surgeons to tell Congress to stop the cuts.

The Surgical Care Coalition’s Week of Action, starting September 21, will include the following public initiatives to highlight the need for Congress to stop these cuts:

  • A webinar with practicing surgeons on the damaging impact of these cuts: Register
  • Grassroots congressional e-mail and social campaigns: Take action
  • A radio media tour with surgeons from Netflix’s Lenox Hill; John A. Boockvar, MD; and David J. Langer, MD
  • A public campaign to raise awareness of the issue nationally

Read the press release and prepare to help send this important message to Congress.

Register NOW for Surgical Care Coalition Webinar on Medicare Payment Cuts

These prospective Medicare payment cuts, taking effect in January 2021, will jeopardize patient access to surgical care while exacerbating the surgical workforce shortage and crisis of rural hospital closures. The Surgical Care Coalition is hosting a webinar, “Medicare Payment Cuts to Surgical Specialties: How Surgeons Will Be Hit and Patients Will Be Harmed by Pending Cuts,” 7:00–8:00 pm Eastern time today to educate surgeons about the pending cuts and what actions they can take to stop them.

The following speakers will discuss the cuts to Medicare payments, the advocacy efforts of the Surgical Care Coalition and how you can help stop these cuts from taking effect:

  • Alan Speir, MD, Chair of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Council on Health Policy and Relationships
  • Nicolas J. Mouawad, MD, MPH, MBA, FACS, RPVI, Fellow of the Society for Vascular Surgery
  • Beth Sutton, MD, FACS, Chair of the ACS Board of Regents

Register now. If you are unable to make the live webinar, register and we will send you a link to the recording following the live event.
