ACS Division of Education Call for Nominations for Two 2021 Resident Awards

The ACS Division of Education is now accepting nominations for two 2021 resident awards through July 16. Information on the awards follows.

2021 ACS Resident Award for Exemplary Teaching

The Division of Education has announced the call for nominations for the 2021 ACS Resident Award for Exemplary Teaching. The award, presented annually, aims to recognize teaching excellence and highlights teaching as an important academic pursuit of surgery residents.

Eligible nominees must be residents in good standing from an accredited surgery residency program, including surgery specialty programs. Graduating chief residents are eligible. Each surgery residency program may nominate one resident. Nominations will be accepted from program directors and department chairs and will be reviewed by an independent review panel appointed by the ACS Committee on Resident Education and the Division of Education. 2021 Jameson L. Chassin, MD, FACS, Award for Professionalism in General Surgery

To recognize Jameson L. Chassin, MD, FACS, and his career and professional interests, the Ninth Annual Chassin Award is being offered through the generosity of the Chassin family, contributors to the Chassin Memorial Fund and the American College of Surgeons Foundation. In accordance with the wishes of the Chassin family, the Jameson L. Chassin, MD, FACS, Award for Professionalism in General Surgery will be presented to a chief resident in general surgery who exemplifies the values of compassion, technical skill and devotion to science and learning.

Eligible nominees must be chief residents in good standing at an accredited surgery residency program. Each surgery residency program may nominate one resident. Nominations will be accepted from program directors and department chairs and will be reviewed by an independent review panel appointed by the ACS Committee on Resident Education and the Division of Education. Rural Surgery, Global, Health System, and Clinical Topics Addressed in SRGS Rural Surgery Issue

Myriad changes in health care continue to affect the delivery of surgical care in rural settings. The latest Selected Readings in General Surgery (SRGS) Rural Surgery issue includes review of articles that add to the understanding of challenges and opportunities that surgeons and surgery residents encounter in rural settings. These include the key elements of the professional development of surgeons to prepare them to practice in these settings and challenges, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This issue of SRGS also focuses on global perspectives regarding rural surgery and the special health care needs in rural environments.
