Call for Nomination for 2020 Mary Edwards Walker Inspiring Women in Surgery Award

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) Women in Surgery Committee (WiSC) is accepting nominations for the 2020 Dr. Mary Edwards Walker Inspiring Women in Surgery Award through May 31, 2020. The award will be presented in recognition of an individual’s contributions to the advancement of women in the field of surgery.

The award is named in honor of Mary Edwards Walker, MD, for her exemplary inspiration as the first woman surgeon employed by the U.S. Army and the only woman to receive the Medal of Honor, the highest U.S. Armed Forces decoration for bravery. Most notably, Dr. Walker was unwavering in her commitment to service to her country and the surgical profession and repeatedly excelled in the face of adversity. Through Dr. Walker’s example of perseverance, excellence, and pioneering behavior, she paved the way for women surgeons of today.

Nominees must have demonstrated a commitment to the advancement and inspiration of women in surgery and be members of the ACS, either in active practice or retired. The awardee is expected to accept the award in person.

All nominations must be accompanied by the following documents:

  • A letter of nomination outlining how the nominee has contributed to the advancement of women in the field of surgery
  • An up-to-date curriculum vitae (CV) of the nominee
  • Self-nominations are acceptable and should include a letter of reference

The letter of nomination and CV should be sent to Carol Christian at cchristian@facs.org by May 31.

More information about the award, including past winners, is available on the ACS website.

Apply for Open 2020 ACS Committee Opportunities

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) depends on volunteers from its diverse membership to drive the mission and initiatives of the organization in support of the surgical profession, and much of this work is carried out through the ACS committees. Serving on an ACS committee is a great opportunity for surgeons to network with colleagues, progress to leadership positions, expand their professional sphere, and contribute to patient care.

Most ACS committee membership terms begin in October, following the annual Clinical Congress, and run for three years. Committee openings are announced in late spring, and membership applications are accepted through early summer.

Several ACS Committees are currently accepting applications. A summary of information for each committee is available on the ACS website by clicking on the dropdown menu for your committees of interest, and more complete information can be found by following these links:
