Biography

Dr. Carmichael is board certified in general surgery and colon and rectal surgery. He completed his general surgery training at the University of California, Irvine. He then completed a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery in Chicago at the Cook County Hospital and University of Illinois, Chicago Medical Center. He remained in private practice for three years at the Ferrell-Duncan Clinic in Springfield, Missouri prior to returning to the University of California, Irvine to teach. Dr. Carmichael started the first robotic rectal surgery program in the State of Missouri, and specializes in both laparoscopic and robotic surgical approaches to diseases of the colon and rectum. He is a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery and participates on several of their national committees. His major interests include work and research in robotic colon and rectal surgery and the multidisciplinary approach to treatment of recurrent/advanced colon and rectal cancer as well as complex problems in inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Carmichael practices with three partners. The group treats the full spectrum of colon and rectal surgery, with a focus on minimally invasive approaches. Laparoscopic, robotic and transanal approaches are all handled within the division of colon and rectal surgery.
