Biography

Raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Dr. Fleming attended Vanderbilt University as an undergraduate and received his MD from the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences School of Medicine in 1990. From 1990 to 1997 Dr. Fleming trained in surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where James C. Carrico was his chairman. His training included a two-year research fellowship in cancer molecular genetics with John D. Minna. In 1999, Dr. Fleming completed a Surgical Oncology fellowship at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and joined the faculty of UT Southwestern where he rose to the rank of Associate Professor with Tenure in 2005. Dr. Fleming returned to MD Anderson in 2006 to join the Pancreas Cancer Program. The clinical and research interests of Dr. Fleming are solely focused on pancreatic cancer. These include the molecular genetics of pancreatic cancer metastasis, development of early detection methods, and the pre-clinical and clinical testing of novel treatments for this disease.
