Camran Nezhat, M.D. is an internationally renowned Laparoscopic Surgeon, Scientist and Innovator at Stanford University Medical Center. He is the pioneer and leading practitioner in the field of laparoscopic surgery, specializing in laparoscopic treatment of severe endometriosis involving multiple organs, management of infertility, myomas of the uterus, and other pelvic diseases. He is the forerunner of starting to operate on the video monitor rather than looking through the eyepiece of the laparoscope. This technique (video laparoscopy) revolutionized operative laparoscopy in all the disciplines of surgery. He has been instrumental in modifying many established procedures performed by laparotomy to laparoscopy, with similar or improved results. Dr. Nezhat has extensive experience in hysteroscopic surgery and he routinely performs hysteroscopic procedures for congenital abnormalities of the uterus, like septate uterus, myomas of the uterus, and endometrial ablation. By collaborating with specialists in different disciplines, such as general, urological, colorectal, and thoracic surgeons, Dr. Camran Nezhat has performed many procedures laparoscopically for the first time, surgeries once considered inoperable by the minimally invasive method. Dr. Camran Nezhat was the first physician to treat extensive endometriosis of the ureter, bladder, bowel, liver, and diaphragm laparoscopically. He published the first ever successful laparoscopic treatment of extensive endometriosis in 1986, proving that the limiting factor for operative laparoscopy is the skill and experience of the surgeon and the availability of proper instrumentation. To our knowledge, no other living and practicing surgeon has done as many laparoscopic surgeries for the treatment of endometriosis. As a result of his dedication, patients for the first time can regain their quality of life a few days after surgery instead of a few months. Thousands of surgeons from all over the world have traveled to attend his post-graduate courses and lectures. Endometriosis - Over 20 years as surgeon and researcher for its treatment and cure Dr. Camran Nezhat has a special interest in endometriosis and is an advocate of early detection and treatment. The extreme conditions of extragenital endometriosis as found on the lungs, fallopian tubes, and ureter were once considered operable only via laparotomy. These areas are so delicate that few surgeons in the world are experienced enough to treat them; Dr. Camran Nezhat was not only the forerunner to successfully treat these difficult conditions laparoscopically, he was also the pioneer who insisted that it was possible.
