Michael S. Nussbaum, M.D., F.A.C.S. is the Senior Vice President, Professor, and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Carilion Clinic and Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. Dr. Nussbaum previously was an endowed, tenured Professor and Chief of the Division of General Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville, where he also served as Chair of the Department of Surgery and the Surgeon-in-Chief from 2008-2013, Program Director for the surgery residency, and Program Director for the advanced gastrointestinal/minimally invasive surgery fellowship. Prior to going to Florida, he held numerous roles at the University of Cincinnati including Interim Chair of the Department of Surgery and Program Director of the surgery residency. He was also a tenured Professor of Surgery, Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs for the Department of Surgery, Program Director for the minimally invasive surgery fellowship and Chief of Staff for the University of Cincinnati Hospital. Dr. Nussbaum is a nationally recognized expert in the area of gastrointestinal, endocrine and minimally invasive surgery and brings with him an extensive background in education and leadership. He served as a Director (2000-2006) and a Senior Director (2006-2022) on the American Board of Surgery. He has served as President of the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and the Central Surgical Association and was Second Vice President of the Southeastern Surgical Congress. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Surgical Association, and the Southern Surgical Association and is a Member of the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the editorial boards for the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery and The American Surgeon and is an ad-hoc reviewer for numerous other journals.
