Biography

Dr. Griffen is a graduate of Louisiana State University Medical School in New Orleans and received his training in general surgery at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport (LSUHSC-S). Following two years in the Navy, he practiced clinical surgery in Shreveport at the Highland Clinic for 34 years. Currently, he is clinical professor of surgery at LSUHSC-S, where he attends a general surgery service. Laparoscopy and herniology are his primary interest, albeit he provides a broad scope of other surgical procedures. Dr. Griffen has served as a governor of the American College of Surgeons, chair of the Governors’ Committee on Professional Liability, and chair of the ACS Patient Safety and Professional Liability Committee. Currently, he serves as ACS 2nd vice-president. Dr. Griffen is a recipient of the ACS Distinguished Service Award. He has recently completed his term as president of the Louisiana State Medical Society. Dr. Griffen is the recipient of the 2010 as well as the 2011 Clarence Webb Clinical Instuctor of the Year Award at LSU in Shreveport and received the Allen Copping Award for best clinical educator in 2011.
