Our practice at Mayo Clinic has been to optimize outcomes and to work with patients as a team. My clinical and research interest has been, and continues to be, to push the boundaries of what surgeons can accomplish technically - and safely - to improve how rapidly patients can recover postoperatively after major abdominal surgery. We have promoted laparoscopic surgery and developed safe procedures for complex colorectal operations, especially for ulcerative colitis and colorectal cancer. Our latest development is the safe adoption of single incision colorectal surgery, even for complex procedures such as proctocolectomy and J pouch for ulcerative colitis.
