ACS Commends WHA Adoption of Resolution on Components of Universal Health Coverage

During its 68th meeting, held May 18-22, 2015, the World Health Assembly (WHA) adopted a resolution on strengthening emergency and essential surgical care and anesthesia as a component of universal health coverage. The resolution was previously adopted by the executive board of the World Health Organization (WHO) at its 136th session.

The American College of Surgeons (ACS), which has over 80,000 members, commends the adoption of this provision to strengthen and improve emergency and safe surgical access for the world’s underserved population. Recent data published by the Disease Control Priorities (DCP3) Essential Surgery and the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery has clearly exposed the acute unmet needs for over five billion people in the world who lack access to basic surgical care.

ACS is committed to working with WHO, health ministries around the world, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and other surgical and anesthesia societies for the betterment of surgical care in the world.
