Chapter Advocacy at the Grassroots Level and Applying for State Advocacy Grants

This webinar helps prepare surgeon advocates for meetings with legislators or staff and provide general tips and advice for a successful meeting. In addition, the presenters outline the grassroots advocacy programs and support services available from the ACS Division of Advocacy and Health Policy (DAHP).

Jon SuttonAbout Jon Sutton

Jon Sutton has served as the primary contact and coordinator for state affairs advocacy since joining the ACS in 1999 as a state affairs associate.  He is one of three College staff focused on state affairs, particularly relating to legislative and regulatory issues. Jon assists ACS Chapters in coordinating advocacy activities, and is the primary staff liaison with the College’s Delegation to the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates and administrator for the Surgical Caucus of the AMA.

With over 30 years of experience in association management in health care, Jon has been involved in various areas including continuing medical education; development of physician educational materials on AIDS, child abuse, and substance abuse; grants management; executive management of Illinois specialty societies; liaison with state government officials; and implementation of grassroots advocacy programs. Prior to coming to the College, Jon spent 14 years with the Illinois State Medical Society, one year as an independent management consultant, and a short stint with the American Academy of Dermatology as its state affairs manager.

Jon received his BS in Recreation Administration from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and his MBA in Strategic Management and Human Resources from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Tara Leyestra AckermanAbout Tara Leystra Ackerman

Tara Leystra Ackerman began working at the ACS in 2013 as a state affairs associate in the DAHP. Her responsibilities include tracking state legislation and working with state chapters on their advocacy efforts. She brings extensive experience working with state chapters to improve their advocacy efforts to the College from her previous position at the American Society of Clinical Oncology, where she ran the grassroots program. She earned her MPH from George Washington University in 2013.

Justin RosenAbout Justin Rosen

Prior to joining ACS as a state affairs associate in 2013, Justin spent four years working for the Speaker of the House in the Connecticut General Assembly and six years as an emergency medical technician covering the greater Hartford, CT, area. Justin also served on the Board of Aldermen in his hometown of Milford, CT.
