American College Of Surgeons - Inspiring Quality: Highest Standards, Better Outcomes

International Fellowship Applicant Interviews

Today, there are more than 7,000 International Fellows of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) representing 130 countries. The number of International Fellows inducted into the College continues to increase each year.

The Board of Regents of the ACS approved an addition to the International Fellowship Requirements that necessitates an interview for all international surgeons who apply for Fellowship, beginning with applications that were considered for induction in 2018. This change to the International Fellowship requirements was made to ensure the thorough evaluation of an applicant based on his or her surgical judgment and experience, professional competence, ethical conduct, and professional standing in the local community.

Process and Timeline

Once an application for Fellowship has been submitted, and the ACS credentials staff has conducted a thorough review of the application and corresponding documentation to confirm the applicant has complied with the application requirements for Fellowship, the applicant will be scheduled for an interview. Here’s a general overview of the process and timeline:

  • Interviews of applicants from your country will be conducted between March 1 and May 31 by teams composed of the officers and governor of your ACS Chapter.
  • The interview can be conducted in person or via any electronic method available to both the applicant and interview team.
  • If the applicant and interview team do not share a common language, the interview will be conducted in English.
  • The interview will be limited to the personal qualities and professional qualifications of the applicant and will avoid any discussion of political or religious topics that could introduce forms of bias.

In the case of differing opinions between members of the interview team, or where controversy may arise, members of the International Relations Committee or the Director of the ACS Division of Member Services will conduct a second interview, and the results will be evaluated by the Applicant Review Committee.

Two training sessions have been held for Chapter Presidents and Governors. Access the presentation from the training sessions and informational documents about the interview process below.
