Clinical Congress 2020The American College of Surgeons (ACS) works continuously to support educational efforts that facilitate the transition from medical school to residency training and encourages involvement in the ACS. The annual Clinical Congress is designed to provide individuals with a wide range of learning opportunities, activities, and experiences that will match their educational and professional development needs. This travel award aims to give young surgeons access to the many learning and networking opportunities available at Clinical Congress.

Resident and Associate Society (RAS-ACS)

Travel award recipient must upgrade their student membership to resident status. The awardee is required to join a Resident and Associate Society of the ACS (RAS-ACS) Committee of their choice and participate in conference calls leading up to Clinical Congress 2020. At Clinical Congress the awardee will be given the opportunity to meet with and shadow members of the RAS-ACS Membership Committee.

By becoming a Resident Member, you will join the RAS-ACS. For surgical trainees and young surgeons, RAS-ACS serves to familiarize you with College programs and leadership. RAS-ACS provides you with an avenue for participation in ACS affairs, fosters development and use of your leadership skills in organized surgery, and provides opportunities for your opinions and concerns as young surgeons and trainees to be heard by College leadership.

Award Terms and Requirements

To be awarded to one ACS student member transitioning to residency and will cover travel and hotel accommodations up to $3,000. Applicant must currently be in their final year of medical school and matched into a surgical residency program. Applicant must be a current member of the American College of Surgeons.

Application Process

The application period will be open from March 23–April 30. Applications are collected online and the submission link will automatically close at 11:59 pm (Central) on Thursday, April 30. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

Submission Materials

A statement of interest regarding your interest in surgery and why you want to attend Clinical Congress 2020. The statement can be provided in two different ways, but only one option can be chosen:

  • Written Statement: No more than 400 words
  • Video Statement: No more than three minutes in length. Video submissions are accepted via links hosted by YouTube, DropBox, GoogleDrive, or Vimeo.

Resident Verification Letter: Applicants must submit a signed letter from his or her resident program coordinator/director confirming upcoming resident status and ensuring time off to attend Clinical Congress. Download the template.
