ACS-AEI Research and Development Committee Update

The ACS Division of Education AEI Research and Development (R&D) Committee is advancing projects to develop collaboration among the AEIs.

ACS Principles and Practice for Simulation and Surgical Education Research Update Project

In response to recent advances in the methods of education delivery and simulation, the R&D Committee is planning to revise the ACS Principles and Practice for Simulation and Surgical Education Research that was published in 2014. James R. Korndorffer, Jr., MD, MHPE, FACS, and Gladys Fernandez, MD, FACS, have been appointed as the Co-Editors-in-Chief and recently presented a revision proposal to the R&D Committee members for their feedback. The next step will be establishing an editorial board and recruiting new chapter authors.

ACS-AEI R&D Committee Collaborative Webinar

The R&D Committee presented the fifth and sixth collaborative research webinars on September 14 and October 17, 2023, which featured engaging discussions and interest from the AEI community.

The first presentation of the September 14 webinar, Interprofessional Curriculum for Emergency Undocking in General Surgery Residency: Robotic Training - Simulator Models and a Protocol, was presented by Mary Oh, MD, from Houston Methodist in Texas. Nicole Brooks, MD, from Cleveland Clinic in Ohio gave the second presentation on the Impact of Implementation of a Robotic Surgery Curriculum and Gamification on Robotic Simulator Usage in a General Surgery Residency.

The first presentation of the October 17 webinar, Comparison of GEARS with Objective Performance Indicators for Assessment of Skill During Robotic-Assisted Thoracic Surgery, was presented by Daniel S. Oh, MD, FACS, from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Laquanda T. Knowlin, MD, from Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, gave the second presentation on the Development and Implementation of a Learners Assessment at a Pediatric Trauma Center.

All the webinar presentations received favorable responses, and several AEIs expressed their interest in collaborating. The next collaborative research webinar will occur in early 2024.
