Are you planning to attend this year’s ACS Clinical Congress in San Diego, CA? If so, the ACS Division of Education’s Committee on Medical Student Education is recruiting faculty volunteers for segments of this year’s 3-day Medical Student Program. You are invited to participate in any of the following events depending on your interest and availability.
Sunday, October 16, 2:15–4:05 pm
Duties: The volunteer judges will be asked to critique medical students’ ePoster presentations. Students will present their research in one of three categories: clinical research; basic science research; or outcomes, innovation, or education research. First and second-place winners in each category will be formally recognized during Tuesday’s program. Volunteer judges typically have some experience in research. No advance preparation on your part is required.
Monday, October 17, 2:50–5:00 pm
Duties: The room will be filled with roundtables of about eight students per table. Each table will involve teaching a skill (knot tying or basic suturing, for example) or discussing how to write a personal statement for residency application purposes. Supplies and handouts will be provided. The duties for the faculty volunteers will include providing hands-on instruction and guidance for knot tying or suturing, or coaching students about how to approach writing their personal statement. There will be four rotations at 30 minutes each. Skills volunteers will be asked to familiarize themselves to the modules beforehand, which will be provided. Otherwise, no advance preparation on your part is required.
Tuesday, October 18, 3:00–5:00 pm
(You are welcome to attend the “Mastering the Surgical Residency Interview” presentation that starts at 2:30 pm in the same location)
Duties: The faculty volunteers at this session will be seated at a table with approximately eight students. The faculty will ask a typical residency interview question and treat it like a real interview. It is suggested to give a single student a question, allow him or her to answer, then spend a few minutes providing feedback about the exchange to the group. This will repeat for as many students as each rotation allows. Ideally, there will be two interviewers per table. There will be three rotations at 40 minutes each. No advance preparation on your part is required.
Scheduling note: If you are also a residency program director or associate program director, note that the Mock Interview session conflicts with the APDS Business Meeting. We will instead plan to see you later that day at the Program Directors Reception with Medical Students.
If you would like to volunteer, fill out the volunteer form. If you are interested in the Skills Session, be sure to note your skills preference(s).
As we get closer to Clinical Congress, we will send out a reminder with the room locations and further instructions. If you have any questions or concerns, reach out to Cassie Buchignani at cbuchignani@facs.org or 312-202-5289.
