We wanted to provide you with a short description of what you can expect for the ACS-AEI Annual Surgical Simulation Summit this year. The College has taken the position that for the first half of 2021, we will be holding all our meetings virtually for the safety and well-being of our members and those colleagues involved in our various programs. The meeting will take place March 11–12 and will be entirely live—using Zoom as our digital platform. All content will be recorded and available to registrants to watch on-demand for up to two months.
New this year is a joint session on Thursday afternoon with the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) to discuss the following: “The Value of Receiving Education and Training at a Simulation Center—Perspectives from a Surgeon and an Anesthesiologist.” The interactive session will include a series of short presentations, along with virtual breakout group exercises that include a mix of both surgeons and anesthesiologists in order for each specialty to learn more about how each profession uses simulation centers to effectively trainer their various learner groups.” We were scheduled to have a session with the ASA at our meeting in 2020, but due to the pandemic we were not able to hold it. This session is not to miss!
This year’s keynote address will be delivered by Julie A. Freischlag, MD, FACS, FRCSEd(Hon), DFSVS, Chief Executive Officer of Wake Forest Baptist Health and Dean of the Wake Forest Baptist School of Medicine. We are also excited to offer paper sessions, panel sessions, posters, and Management, Operations, Research and Education (MORE) programming.
We realize that a virtual meeting cannot possibly capture everything that the ACS AEI Program wants to offer at one time, so we will be hosting additional virtual sessions throughout the spring and early summer in 2021.
Finally, to offer this type of educational meeting takes resources. Therefore, a nominal registration fee will be charged to attend the live sessions; however, as an attendee you will have access to the content once it is captured and ready for on-demand viewing for a period of two months. CME and Patient Safety credit will also be available to claim within the two-month period.
