Take the Next Step as a Surgeon Educator: Apply for CASEL Certificate

Applications are now being accepted for the 2024 cycle of the ACS Certificate in Applied Surgical Education Leadership (CASEL). This unique program is designed for surgeon educators who are interested in improving their knowledge and skills as educational leaders and is worthwhile for all surgeons who have been in practice at least 2 years.

Accepted participants will be offered content and skill-building opportunities through a mentored, hybrid delivery model designed to enhance learning, retention, and application. The program includes didactic and enduring materials, independent work, online access, and large and small group interactions. Participants will complete an applied surgical education leadership project at their home institution under the guidance of a CASEL mentor, CASEL faculty, and ACS staff.

Space is limited to 16 participants, and the deadline for 2024 CASEL applications is Friday, November 17, 2023.

Submission of an individual project idea and CV is required as part of the application process. For those selected, the in-person kick-off will take place April 18-20, 2024, at ACS Headquarters in Chicago, Illinois. The time commitment includes:

• CASEL Virtual Kick-Off: ~20 hours of educational content
• CASEL Post-Kick-Off Sessions: six-eight 90-minute evening sessions
• Mentor Meetings: 1 hour per month
• Quarterly Check-Ins: 60-90 minutes in June 2024, September 2024, January 2025, and March 2025
• Individualized Project Work: Ongoing throughout CASEL program
• Final Presentation and Graduation: 5–7 hours as part of 2025 CASEL Kick-Off
