Excelsior Surgical Society/Edward D. Churchill Lecture

This lecture is named for the Excelsior Surgical Society, a group of 80 medical officers who met for the first time in 1945 at the Excelsior Hotel, Rome, Italy. This lecture also honors Colonel Edward D. Churchill, a famous surgeon and consultant to the U.S. Army in the World War II Italian Theater, who presented the first keynote address at this meeting. These meetings continued annually until the death of the last World War II member, Dr. Michael Debakey. Facilitated by the recently established partnership between the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the Military Health System (MHSSPACS), a new generation of surgeons who have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan have resurrected the Excelsior Surgical Society and with the ratification of its bylaws and election of officers, it is now an official society within the ACS.
