Program Description

The Junior Associate will serve as a junior faculty member and primarily be associated with the Acute Care Surgery team. The goal is that the associate will improve their operative skills and clinical evaluation in general surgical procedures including endoscopy, laparoscopy, and robotic surgery. Junior Associates will work primarily at Milstein Hospital, an academic quaternary care referral center, and be given a title of Clinical Instructor of Surgery. Duties will include daily resident teaching, leading morning report, ward rounds, and operative cases. Two days per week will include outpatient general surgery clinic and one day per week will include telehealth visits for the general surgery clinic. Experience will include general surgery, critical care, and endoscopy. Allen Hospital is an integrated site accessible by shuttle. At this community hospital, Junior Associates will provide one week of coverage every five weeks for inpatients, outpatient clinic, and consult services.

The service is a broad based general surgical practice including critical care, endoscopy, laparoscopy, and robotic surgery while providing additional experience in any area as needed. The associate will have access to the DaVinci Xi robot at the Milstein Hospital including acute care cases and is expected to graduate the program with the faculty support and volume necessary to meet credentialing requirements at other facilities. Additional training courses can also be attended based on interest and availability. The case records will be reviewed to identify areas for more intense experience. The Program Chief will discuss with the Junior Associate their goals and expectations as well as areas for improvement prior to their start date. Research is not a requirement for the position but many opportunities exist within the Department of Surgery for interested candidates.

The Junior Associate will be supervised in all operative cases for the first month. After this month, a review will determine which cases the Junior Associate may staff independently. There will be monthly evaluations of the Junior Associate’s ability to operate independently on a variety of cases. Additionally, morning report serves as a recap of the last 24 hours of consults. A backup call system with Senior Associates will also be in place to help support the Junior Associate as needed. Both the Junior Associate’s call activities and decisions, as well as the ability to lead morning report will be evaluated by the Senior Associates. Quarterly reviews will include educational, clinical, and administrative performance as well as medical student and resident evaluations, all of which will inform the planned experience moving forward.

The Junior Associate will be responsible for documentation and billing of their clinical activities. Following orientation, the Junior Associate will review their billing and documentation in real time for the first month, and quarterly, the practice manager and supervising biller will review metrics for billing and appropriate documentation.

There will be support for the Junior Associate to attend the ACS Clinical Congress, and participate in weekly Division of General Surgery CME, M&M, and Grand Rounds.
